Guided Night Tours of Marrakech – Safe Evening Experiences
What is the Marrakech Medina like after sunset, with a local guide by your side?
After dark, the Medina of Marrakech turns into a different city. Smoke rises from the grills of Jemaa el-Fna, Gnawa drums and halqa storytellers draw circles of people, lanterns glow in Souk Semmarine and the Koutoubia minaret lights up against the night sky. On our guided evening walk, a local guide picks you up at your riad or hotel, takes you through the square, the lit souks and the quieter derbs, helps you choose the best food stalls, and walks you safely back. About 2 hours, private, from your riad or hotel in the Medina or Gueliz. Message Us On WhatsApp or use our Booking Form.
By day, the souks belong to the artisans. By night, they belong to Marrakchis. Families stroll Semmarine after the evening prayer, teenagers share a bowl of snail soup, grandfathers sip khoudenjal tea, and the call to prayer from the Koutoubia rolls across the rooftops. It's the Marrakech most visitors only see from the Café de France terrace.
Visit Marrakech Medina, The Best Shopping and Walking Tour Company in Marrakech, has guided travelers through the Medina since 2004. Our guiding is Recommended By Rick Steves, and our Medina walk was featured by Daniel Jacobs in The Rough Guide To Morocco. Our guides grew up in these derbs, from Derb Dabachi to Mouassine, by day and by night.

How does Jemaa el-Fna change after dark?
In the afternoon, Jemaa el-Fna is snake charmers, water sellers in red costumes and juice stands. Around sunset, rows of numbered food stalls roll in, smoke from merguez, brochettes and grilled sardines fills the air, and the square becomes the biggest open-air kitchen in Morocco. Musicians, acrobats and storytellers form their halqa circles, fortune tellers and henna artists set up under gas lamps, and the crowd is mostly Moroccan families from Gueliz, Daoudiate and the Medina. Its name is said to mean "the assembly of the end", a place of executions that turned into a place of life. See Why Does Jemaa El-Fna Come Alive After Sunset?
What should you eat at night in the Medina?
• Harira, the tomato, lentil and chickpea soup, served with dates and chebakia
• Snail soup, babbouche in Darija, a local favorite sipped from small bowls
• Brochettes and merguez, grilled kefta, lamb skewers and spicy sausages with khobz bread
• Tangia, the Marrakech specialty, beef slow-cooked in a clay pot in the ashes of the hammam fire
• Tagine and couscous, chicken with preserved lemon and olives, or seven-vegetable couscous
• Khoudenjal, a hot spiced drink with ginger and cinnamon, served with a spiced cake
• Mint tea and fresh orange juice to finish
Your guide helps you pick busy stalls with fresh food, explains the menu in Darija and the prices in MAD, so you don't pay for khobz, olives and harissa you didn't order.
Is the Medina safe at night?
Yes, the main streets of the Medina, Semmarine, Riad Zitoun, Kennaria, Derb Dabachi and the square, are lively until late, with Marrakchi families, tourist police and well-lit souks. A few habits help.
• Watch your bag and phone in the halqa circles and around the food stalls of Jemaa el-Fna
• Say "la, shukran" to henna artists or animal handlers if you don't want a photo or a tattoo, and agree on the price before any service
• Ignore "the road is closed" stories and offers to show you the way, which often end in a shop or a tip request
• Watch for scooters in the narrow derbs, they pass quickly even at night
• Know your way back to your riad, or take a petit taxi from Bab Agnaou, Bab Doukkala or the Koutoubia side of the square
With a local guide, you simply walk, listen to the Gnawa and taste the tangia. See Why Does Google Maps Get Lost In The Derbs?

"We had a lovely evening walking around the Medina. It was a completely different experience at night, much more relaxed and beautiful with all the lights and busy little streets. Our guide was friendly and showed us places we would never have found by ourselves. Really enjoyed it!"

Michael, United States
"We booked the night walking tour and honestly didn't know what to expect. We ended up having a great time. The Medina has a different atmosphere after dark, the food stalls, little shops and all the people around. We learned quite a bit about local life too. Two hours went very quickly. Definitely worth doing."

• Climb to a rooftop café for the view of the grill smoke, the food stalls, the halqa circles and the Koutoubia minaret
• Bring small coins, 10 and 20 MAD dirham pieces, for Gnawa musicians, acrobats and storytellers you photograph
• Wear closed shoes, the cobbled derbs and the zellige thresholds are uneven and dim in places
• Dress lightly but modestly, with a scarf or a light jacket in winter, when evenings in Marrakech get cold, perfect for a bowl of harira or a cup of khoudenjal
• Save time for the day too. The artisans' workshops close in the evening, so see them on a morning walk. See Where Do The Medina's Craftsmen Work By Day?
