Jewelry & Artisan Shopping Tour in Marrakech

Where do you find real Berber silver and handmade jewelry in Marrakech?

On our jewelry and artisan shopping tour, a local guide takes you to the jewelers' souk near the Mellah, where goldsmiths sell by the gram, and to the silver workshops and Berber jewelry shops of the Medina, where fibula brooches, Hand of Fatima pendants, amber necklaces and Tiznit enamel bracelets are made and sold. You watch silversmiths hammer, engrave and solder, learn to check the 925 hallmark and the clasp, and buy only what you love, at a fair price. Private tours from 900 MAD for 1 to 2 people, about 3 hours, pickup at your riad or hotel. Message Us On WhatsApp or use our Booking Form.

Every bazaar near Jemaa el-Fna has trays of "Berber silver" rings and cuffs at tempting prices. Some are real silver worked by hand, many are nickel or plated metal that turns your finger green. The pieces worth bringing home come from the small workshops of the silversmiths and the old jewelers of the Mellah, and the trick is knowing which is which before you pay.

Visit Marrakech Medina, The Best Shopping and Walking Tour Company in Marrakech, has taken travelers shopping in the souks since 2004. Our guiding is Recommended By Rick Steves, and our Medina walk was featured by Daniel Jacobs in The Rough Guide To Morocco. We know the silversmiths, goldsmiths and artisan families of the Medina, and which workshops make the best pieces.

What Moroccan jewelry can you buy in Marrakech?

• Berber silver rings and cuffs, engraved with geometric symbols, from simple bands to heavy tribal pieces

• Fibula brooches, tizerzai in Tamazight, the triangular pins that once held a Berber woman's dress

• Hand of Fatima pendants, the khamsa, a symbol of protection worn across Morocco

• Amber, coral and coin necklaces, the bold beads of Berber weddings from the Atlas and the south

• Enamel jewelry from Tiznit, silver with yellow, green and blue enamel, from the silver capital of Morocco

• Filigree earrings, fine silver threads twisted into lace-like patterns

• Gold jewelry, bracelets and chains sold by weight in the jewelers' souk, at the daily gold price plus the work

• Kohl pots and small silver boxes, easy gifts that fit in your pocket

How do you know if Moroccan silver is real?

• Look for the 925 hallmark stamped inside a ring or on the clasp. Old Berber pieces often have none, so ask your guide.

• Try a magnet. Silver isn't magnetic. If the magnet sticks, it's steel or nickel.

• Check the weight. Real silver feels heavier than plated metal of the same size.

• Look at the edges and inside. Plating wears off at the edges and shows a yellow or grey metal underneath.

• Ask about "Berber silver". Many traditional pieces are a mixed alloy with less silver. They're beautiful, but the price should match.

• For amber, real amber is light and warm to the touch. Plastic copies feel cold and heavy.

How do you bargain for jewelry without stress?

Bargaining for silver is normal in the souks, and it should stay friendly. Know your budget in dirhams, compare two workshops, and ask the price per piece, not per gram, for silver. Gold is different, it's sold by the gram at the day's price, so you only discuss the work. Buying two or three pieces in the same workshop often brings a better total. If it doesn't feel right, say "la, shukran" and move on. More tips in How Do You Bargain With A Smile In The Souks?

What do travelers ask about jewelry shopping in Marrakech?

Where is the jewelry souk in Marrakech?

The jewelers' souk is near the Mellah, the old Jewish quarter, close to Bahia Palace. Silver workshops and Berber jewelry shops are also spread through the souks north of Jemaa el-Fna.

Is Moroccan silver good quality?

The best is excellent, hand-hammered 925 silver. Quality varies a lot from shop to shop, so check the hallmark, the weight and the magnet test before you buy.

Can I have a piece made to order?

Yes. Many silversmiths make rings and pendants to your size or design in a few days. Ask us on WhatsApp before your trip.

Do I have to buy something?

No. You watch the silversmiths, compare and buy only if you love a piece.

Can you help with gifts on a budget?

Yes. Small silver earrings, khamsa pendants and kohl pots make lovely gifts, and your guide shows you where to find them at fair prices.
