First Day Marrakech
How should you spend your first 24 hours in Marrakech?
On your first day in Marrakech, keep it simple. Get from Menara airport to your riad, take dirhams from an ATM, have mint tea on the rooftop, then walk to Jemaa el-Fna for the sunset and dinner at the food stalls. The next morning, walk the Medina with a local guide who shows you the main axes, Semmarine, Derb Dabachi and Rahba Kedima, so you can explore the souks alone for the rest of your trip. Our small group walk leaves the Café de France at 10 am for 300 MAD per person, and private walks start from 900 MAD for 1 to 2 people, with pickup at your riad. Message Us On WhatsApp or use our Booking Form.
Your first hours in the Medina can feel like a lot. Scooters and donkey carts in narrow derbs, calls of "hello my friend" from the bazaars of Semmarine, a riad hidden behind a plain cedar door with two brass knockers and no sign, the smell of cumin from Rahba Kedima, and Google Maps spinning in circles. Every visitor goes through it, and after one good walk with a Marrakchi, the maze of souks and derbs turns into a map.
Visit Marrakech Medina, The Best Shopping and Walking Tour Company in Marrakech, has welcomed first-time visitors to the Medina since 2004. Our guiding is Recommended By Rick Steves, and our Medina walk was featured by Daniel Jacobs in The Rough Guide To Morocco. What does a perfect first day in Marrakech look like?
• Arrival Land at Marrakech Menara airport, about 15 to 20 minutes by car from the Medina, take dirhams from the ATM and buy a local SIM card from Maroc Telecom, Orange or inwi
• To your riad Cars can't enter most derbs, so ask your riad to send someone to meet your taxi at the nearest gate or square, often with a cart for your suitcases
• Mint tea on the rooftop Rest by the fountain and orange trees of the courtyard, drink mint tea with almond cookies, and ask your riad host for the way to Jemaa el-Fna
• Late afternoon Walk to the Koutoubia minaret and its rose gardens, the 12th-century landmark you can see from almost every rooftop
• Sunset Watch Jemaa el-Fna change from a market square to an open-air kitchen from the Café de France terrace
• Dinner Harira with dates, lamb brochettes, merguez or tangia at the numbered food stalls, or a tagine on a rooftop restaurant over the square
• Back to the riad Before the derbs get quiet, along the main streets, Riad Zitoun, Kennaria or Derb Dabachi, past the lantern shops and the last juice stalls
Why book a guided walk on your first morning?
A first walk with a local changes your whole trip. In about 3 hours, you learn the main axes of the Medina, Semmarine, Biadine and Riad Zitoun, see Rahba Kedima, the Almoravid Koubba and Ben Youssef Madrasa, meet the artisans of Souk Haddadine, and learn how to say no with a smile. We call the secret The H Rule, two parallel streets joined by the old spice square, and once you know it, you stop getting lost. See What Is The H Rule Every First-Timer Should Know?
Arriving late from the airport or deciding the night before? Message us on WhatsApp, we take last-minute bookings for the Café de France group. See Which Walks Can You Still Join This Week?
What should you know before your first walk in the Medina?
• Money The dirham, MAD, is a closed currency, so you get it in Morocco. Small shops, taxis and food stalls take cash only, so keep 20, 50 and 100 MAD notes
• Taxis The beige petit taxis run between the Medina, Gueliz and the Hivernage. Ask for the meter, the "compteur", or agree on the price before you get in
• Clothes Light cotton or linen covering shoulders and knees, closed shoes for the cobbled derbs and zellige thresholds, a scarf or hat for the sun
• Photos Ask before you photograph people, artisans, spice stalls or henna artists, and expect a few dirhams for snake charmers and Gnawa musicians
• Words that help "Salam" for hello, "shukran" for thank you, "la, shukran" for no thank you, "shhal" for how much
• Time Many shops on Semmarine open around 9 or 10 am, and Friday at midday is prayer time at the Koutoubia and the neighborhood mosques, when some shops in the souks close for a while. See What Time Do The Souks Open On Your First Day?
Which first-day mistakes should you avoid?
• "The square is closed" or "the tannery near Bab Debbagh closes today", a friendly stranger leading you to a leather or carpet shop
• Trusting Google Maps in the derbs, it often loses you between the high ochre walls of the Medina. See Why Does Google Maps Fail In The Medina?
• Buying a rug or lantern on day one, before you've seen prices in MAD, wool quality and a few workshops
• Henna without a price, agree on the cost before the artist starts
• Changing euros at the hotel desk, an ATM or an official bureau de change near Jemaa el-Fna usually gives more dirhams
• Doing too much, the Medina is best in small doses, with breaks for mint tea, fresh orange juice and a hammam with black soap

What Happens On A Real Tour With Us?
Emily, United Kingdom
"We arrived in Marrakech in the morning and decided to do a walking tour that same afternoon. It was honestly a great way to start our holiday. We saw parts of the Medina we would probably never have found on our own, visited the souks and learned quite a lot along the way. Really enjoyed it and felt much more comfortable exploring the city afterwards."
What do travelers ask about their first day in Marrakech?
How do I get from Marrakech airport to the Medina?
By taxi in about 15 to 20 minutes, or with a transfer arranged by your riad, who often sends a porter with a cart to the nearest gate, like Bab Doukkala or Bab Agnaou. Agree on the taxi price in dirhams before you leave the airport.
Is one day enough to see the Medina?
One guided morning shows you the essentials, Jemaa el-Fna, Semmarine, Rahba Kedima and Ben Youssef Madrasa. Most visitors stay 3 to 4 days to add Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, Majorelle Garden and a day trip to the Atlas or Essaouira.
Is it safe to walk in the Medina on the first evening?
Yes, on the main streets around Jemaa el-Fna, Semmarine and Riad Zitoun, which stay lively until late. Ask your riad for the easiest way back past the Koutoubia or the Café de France.
Should I book a tour for my first day?
A morning walk on day one or two helps most. You learn the derbs, the souks, fair prices in MAD and the polite "la, shukran", and enjoy the rest of your stay with confidence.
Can you pick me up at my riad?
Yes, for private walks, at riads and hotels in the Medina, Gueliz or the Hivernage. Group walks meet at the Café de France on Jemaa el-Fna, facing Semmarine.
