Rug Shopping Tour Royal Mansour
Rug Shopping Tour from Royal Mansour Marrakech: Find a Real Berber Rug with a Local Guide
Here's a common problem at Royal Mansour. You walk through your private riad, your bare feet sink into a hand-knotted silk carpet, and a dangerous thought appears: "I need one of these at home."
Then you remember your living room back home has a rug from a big furniture store called something like "Grunvald." It suddenly looks very sad.
So you head to the souks, where roughly four thousand rugs are waiting, and every seller swears his rug was woven by his grandmother, personally, last Tuesday. Some of them are telling the truth. Some of them are telling a lovely story.
We've been guiding visitors through the Marrakech rug souks for years, and our job is simple: help you tell the difference, find a piece you truly love, and pay a fair price for it. Here's how it works from Royal Mansour.
Where is Royal Mansour in Marrakech?
Royal Mansour is located in the Medina of Marrakech, at Rue Abou Abbas El Sebti, 40000 Marrakech, Morocco, just inside the old city walls, a short walk from the Koutoubia and Jemaa el-Fna.
In words: the hotel sits on Rue Abou Abbas El Sebti, along the western ramparts of the Marrakech Medina, between the Koutoubia area and the Bab Doukkala side of the old city.

We have welcomed guests staying at Royal Mansour, and they were very happy with their private Medina experience and our local guidance. One guest told us the best moment was realizing she could finally tell a real Beni Ourain from a "Beni Ourain-inspired" one. Her husband said the best moment was the mint tea.

What types of Moroccan rugs can you find in Marrakech?
The main types are Beni Ourain, Azilal, Boucherouite, Kilim, Boujad and Taznakht rugs. Each comes from a different region and style.
Rug type
Style
Good to know
Beni Ourain
Cream wool with black or brown lines
Thick, soft, very popular, often imitated
Azilal
White base with bright colorful patterns
Artistic and bold, each one unique
Boucherouite
Made from recycled fabric strips
Colorful, fun and often more affordable
Kilim (hanbel)
Flat-woven, no pile
Light, easy to ship, great as wall hangings
Boujad
Pink, red and orange tones
Warm, abstract designs
Taznakht
Dense, often saffron or henna dyed
Traditional, very durable
How do you know if a Moroccan rug is authentic?
Turn it over. A hand-knotted rug shows slightly irregular knots on the back, and the pattern is visible almost as clearly as on the front. Machine-made rugs look perfectly even and often have a glued or mesh backing. Real wool feels slightly oily and doesn't melt when heated, while synthetic fibers do. On our tour, we show you these checks directly in the shops.
How much should you pay for a rug in Marrakech?
It depends on size, age, wool and knot density, but the first price you hear is almost never the final one. Small, simple pieces can be quite affordable, while large vintage Beni Ourain or Azilal rugs cost much more. Our advice from experience: decide your budget before you enter the shop, not after the fourth mint tea.
