Questions Buy Moroccan Rug
Before you fall in love with a rug in Marrakech (and you will), ask these 10 questions so you bring home the right one at a fair price.
At Visit Marrakech Medina, shopping is what we do best. We are insider shopping guides who know the souks, the rug cooperatives and the sellers worth your time, and we have guided everyone from first-time visitors to luxury travelers and a few well-known faces we are far too polite to name. We have been recommended by Rick Steves and featured by Daniel Jacobs in The Rough Guide to Morocco. Want someone on your side while you choose a rug? Message us on WhatsApp and we can often have a guide with you within the hour.

Here is how it usually goes. You walk into a rug shop "just to look." Someone hands you a mint tea. Rugs start flying onto the floor like a magic show, each one more beautiful than the last. Two teas later, you are discussing shipping to Ohio or Manchester for a rug you did not know existed this morning. It happens to the best of us. The good news: a few smart questions make the difference between a rug you love for 30 years and one you regret before your plane lands.
1. Is It Handmade or Machine-Made?
Flip the rug over. On a hand-knotted rug, the back looks almost like the front, with small irregularities in the pattern and knots you can actually see. A machine-made rug has a perfectly even grid on the back, and the fringe is often sewn on instead of being the ends of the rug's own threads. Small imperfections are not a flaw here. They are the signature of a real weaver.
2. What Is It Made Of?
Most Moroccan rugs are wool, sometimes mixed with cotton. Good wool feels soft and slightly oily from natural lanolin. Be curious about "cactus silk" (sabra): beautiful and shiny, but often made from viscose or another fiber, so ask exactly what it is. Some sellers will offer a quick burn test on a loose thread: wool smells like burnt hair, synthetic fibers melt.
3. Where Was It Made?
Each region has its own style, and a good seller should know the story of the rug in front of you:
Beni Ourain: thick, cream-colored wool with dark geometric lines, from the Middle Atlas.
Azilal: colorful and abstract, often on a white background.
Boucherouite: made from recycled fabric, playful and usually more affordable.
Kilim and Hanbel: flat-woven, lighter and reversible.
Taznakht region: rich reds, oranges and deep colors.
If the answer is vague, keep asking.
4. Are the Dyes Natural or Synthetic?
Both can be fine, but natural dyes (henna, saffron, indigo, pomegranate) are more prized and age more gracefully. Ask the seller, then rub a damp white tissue on the rug. If color comes off, walk away. Also ask how the colors react to sunlight, especially if the rug will sit near a window.
5. How Old Is It, Really?
"Vintage" and "antique" are magic words in the souks. Many "old" rugs are newer rugs that have been washed or sun-faded to look aged. That is not a problem in itself, as long as you pay a new-rug price for it. Look at how the wear is spread: real age shows uneven, natural wear, not a perfectly faded surface.
6. Pile or Flat-Weave, and Is It Right for Your Space?
A thick pile rug like a Beni Ourain is perfect for a bedroom or living room where you walk barefoot. A flat-weave kilim is lighter, easier to pack and great for hallways or high-traffic areas. A boucherouite looks amazing but is better for low-traffic corners. Think about where the rug will live before you think about color.
7. How Is the Price Calculated?
Rug prices are often based on size, so ask for the dimensions and the price per square meter. This lets you compare between shops instead of guessing. Bargaining is normal and expected, so stay friendly, take your time, and never feel bad about saying you want to think about it. A good seller will still smile.
8. Will It Actually Fit?
Measure your rooms before your trip and take photos of the space on your phone. Write the sizes down in both feet and meters (1 meter is about 3.3 feet), because sellers will usually quote in meters. A rug that looks small spread on a shop floor can suddenly take over your living room.
9. How Will It Get Home?
Many rugs fold surprisingly small, and sellers can pack them tightly for your checked luggage, flat-weaves being the easiest. If you ship, ask for:
A written receipt with the rug's description, size and price
The shipping cost, the carrier and a tracking number
Insurance and an estimated delivery time
Travelers from the US, the UK and elsewhere may have to pay import duties or taxes on arrival, so check your country's rules before you buy. Paying by card can also give you extra protection.
10. How Do I Care for It?
Ask the seller how to clean that specific rug. In general, vacuum wool rugs without a beater bar, rotate them every few months so they wear evenly, use a rug pad underneath and go to a professional for deep cleaning. A little shedding in the first weeks is normal for new wool rugs.
