Marrakesh Souks Shopping Guide UK Travellers

Marrakech for UK Travellers: The Honest Guide to Shopping, Souks and Private Tours

There are two kinds of British visitors in the Marrakech souks. The first kind buys a lantern in the first ten minutes, then spends three days wondering if they paid too much. The second kind looks at everything, nods politely, says "lovely, I'll have a think," and disappears. Then, on the very last afternoon, they come back for the rug they've been dreaming about all week.

We have welcomed a great many guests from the UK over the years, and we'll let you into a secret: the second kind usually gets the better deal. Taking your time in Marrakech isn't rude. It's smart. This guide covers everything UK travellers ask us before and after they arrive, from money and plugs to haggling, shipping and how to shop without pressure.

Is Marrakech a good destination for UK travellers?

Yes. Marrakech is one of the easiest exotic city breaks from the UK. Flights take around 3.5 to 4 hours from London and many regional airports, the time difference is small, and a long weekend is enough to see the Medina, the souks and the main sights.

Do UK citizens need a visa for Morocco?

No. UK passport holders can usually visit Morocco for up to 90 days without a visa. Your passport should be valid for your whole stay, but always check the latest gov.uk travel advice before you go.

What is the time difference between the UK and Marrakech?

Very little. Morocco is usually on the same time as the UK in summer and one hour ahead in winter. During Ramadan, Moroccan clocks change, so check the time before booking anything on arrival.

What currency should I take to Marrakech?

You'll use Moroccan dirhams (MAD). The dirham is a closed currency, so you usually can't buy it in the UK before you travel. Take pounds or a bank card and get dirhams on arrival, from an ATM or exchange counter at the airport. Cards are accepted in hotels, larger shops and some restaurants, but cash is king in the souks.

Do I need a plug adapter in Marrakech?

Yes. Morocco uses the two round pin European plugs, so bring a UK to EU adapter.

How do I get from Marrakech Airport to the Medina?

Marrakech Menara Airport is about 6 km from the Medina, roughly 15 to 20 minutes by taxi. Agree the fare before getting in. Our Marrakech Airport to Medina guide covers taxis, Bus 19 and riad drop-offs in detail.

Where are the Marrakech souks?

The souks are in the heart of the Medina, just north of Jemaa el-Fna square. The main entrance is Souk Semmarine, on the north side of the square.

Is Marrakech safe for British tourists?

Generally, yes. The main annoyances are pickpockets in crowds, persistent sellers and people offering directions you didn't ask for. Keep your bag closed, say "no, thank you" with a smile, and keep walking. A local guide makes the souks much more relaxed.

What should I wear in Marrakech?

Light, comfortable clothes that cover shoulders and knees are respectful in the Medina and help keep the sun off. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything: the alleys are long, uneven and full of distractions.

When is the best time for UK travellers to visit Marrakech?

Spring and autumn are ideal, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer can be very hot, often above 40°C, so shop early in the morning. Winter days are sunny and mild, but nights are cold, so pack a jumper.

Can I drink alcohol in Marrakech?

Yes, in licensed hotels, bars and some restaurants. You won't find it in the souks or most Medina cafés, where mint tea is the drink of choice.

How does haggling work in the souks?

Haggling is expected and part of the culture. A few rules that work well for UK travellers:

Ask the price, but never feel obliged to make an offer

Start well below the asking price and meet somewhere in the middle

Stay friendly: negotiation is a conversation, not a battle

If the price doesn't feel right, thank the seller and walk away

It's perfectly normal to say "I'll think about it" and come back tomorrow

Is it rude to leave a shop without buying?

Not at all. Sellers are used to it. A polite "thank you, maybe later" is enough. In fact, many good deals happen when you come back a day or two later, because the seller knows you're serious.

Why do so many British visitors buy on their last day?

Because it's the smart way to shop. You spend the first days looking, comparing and learning prices, then buy the pieces you can't stop thinking about. Our tours are built around that rhythm.

How do your shopping tours work for travellers who like to take their time?

We call it "look today, buy later." On our shopping tours, you can simply look, compare and buy nothing at all. Your guide notes the pieces and prices you liked, explains what makes each one good value or not, and lets you sleep on it.

When you're ready, usually near the end of your stay, we can organise a short final-day shopping session to go back to the pieces you chose, negotiate properly and arrange shipping before your flight.

No pressure. No forced shopping. You decide.

Should I book a walking tour or a shopping tour first?

Most of our UK guests start with the Medina Walking Tour. It's the best way to get your bearings, understand how the souks are organised and see prices without anyone expecting you to buy. Then they book the Souk Shopping Tour or Rug Shopping Tour later in their stay, once they know what they want.

If you're short on time, we can combine both into one personalised tour, with shopping stops where buying is entirely optional.

What tours does Visit Marrakech Medina offer?

Medina Walking Tour: history, hidden alleys, palaces and local life, at a relaxed pace

Souk Shopping Tour: a private tour through the souks, the Mellah spice market, lantern makers, jewellers and artisan workshops, with help on quality and fair prices

Rug Shopping Tour: we don't simply take you to a rug shop. We help you understand what you're seeing, compare pieces, assess quality, negotiate, and make your own decision.

Every tour is private and personalised. Hotel or riad pickup is available. It is optional and mainly for your convenience.

How much does a private shopping tour cost?

Our private shopping tours range from 700 to 1,000 MAD for a family or small group, roughly £55 to £85 depending on the exchange rate, the duration and the itinerary. What's included is clear from the start, with no hidden fees.

What should a Moroccan rug cost?

It depends on size, age, wool quality, knot density and rarity. A small new rug and a large vintage kilim can be worlds apart in price. Before you negotiate, we explain what affects the value of each piece, so you know what a fair price looks like and never feel ripped off.

How can I tell if a rug or craft is genuine?

A few quick checks:

Rugs: look at the back. Hand-knotted rugs show the pattern clearly, with small irregularities

Wool: soft and natural, not dry or plastic-like

Dyes: natural colours fade gently and vary slightly

Leather: supple, with an earthy smell

Lanterns: small imperfections show they were hand-punched

Argan oil: buy from trusted cooperatives, as diluted versions are common

Your guide shows you all of this in person, which is far easier than reading about it.

Can I ship rugs and purchases to the UK?

Yes. Most dealers in Marrakech ship to the UK through international couriers. Before you pay:

Get a written invoice describing the item

Take photos of what you bought

Ask for tracking and insurance

Confirm who pays import charges

Shipped goods may be subject to UK import VAT and customs charges. If you carry purchases in your luggage, the UK personal allowance applies, and anything above it should be declared. Check gov.uk for the current rules before you buy something large.

Can I fit a rug in my suitcase?

Often, yes. Many rugs can be folded tightly and packed in hold luggage. Your guide can ask the seller to fold and wrap it for travel.

Do I need to tip in Marrakech?

Tipping is appreciated but not compulsory. Around 10% in restaurants is common, and a tip for your guide is a kind way to say thank you if you enjoyed the tour.

I'm already in Marrakech. Can I book a last-minute tour?

Yes. If you're already in Marrakech, message us on WhatsApp and a guide can join you at your riad or in the Medina within one hour. Same-day bookings are welcome, even if you only have a few hours left.
