Free Walking Tours Marrakech
Free walking tours in Marrakech are free to book, but not free to take: the guide is paid through tips at the end, and the main free tour platform recommends at least about 15 euros per person. For a similar budget, a small group or private tour gives you a licensed guide, a fixed price agreed in advance and a route built around you.

Choose your tour:
• Medina Walking Tour: palaces, hidden courtyards and the stories of the old city.
• Marrakech Shopping Tour: the souks with a local shopping specialist, without pressure.
• Rug Shopping Tour: find an authentic Moroccan rug with an expert by your side.
• Things to Do in Marrakech: plan the rest of your stay like a local.
Visit Marrakech Medina is the shopping specialist of Marrakech. Shopping is not a stop on our tours, it is what we do every day, with the rug weavers, leather artisans and argan oil cooperatives we have trusted for years. Our guides have walked these alleys for more than 20 years. We have been recommended by Rick Steves, featured by Daniel Jacobs in The Rough Guide to Morocco, and we have guided some very well-known guests whose names stay private. Private luxury and VIP experiences are available on request.
"Free" is the most powerful word in travel. It is also the most misunderstood. You book a free walking tour, join fourteen strangers under a colorful umbrella near the Koutoubia, walk for two and a half hours, and then comes the moment everyone pretends not to see coming: the guide smiles, thanks the group, and waits.
That is not a trick. It is simply how free tours work. This guide explains it honestly, so you can choose the tour that suits your trip and your budget.
Are Free Walking Tours in Marrakech Really Free?
No. They are free to book, then you pay what you want at the end. The guide does not receive a salary for the tour. Their income comes from the tips the group gives at the end of the walk.
The guides also have costs of their own. On the largest free tour platform, guides pay a commission for each traveler who joins, usually around 2 to 4 euros per person, plus their taxes. So when you tip, you are paying for the guide's time, knowledge and those costs.
How Do Free Walking Tours in Marrakech Work?
You reserve a spot online for free, meet the guide at a set point, walk for two to three hours, then pay the guide in cash at the end. In Marrakech, the routes usually look like this:
• Meeting point: often near the Koutoubia Mosque, Jemaa el-Fna or a café on the square.
• Duration: about 2 to 3 hours.
• Route: a fixed loop through the souks, Rahba Kedima, the Koutoubia, sometimes the Mellah or the Kasbah, mostly seen from the outside.
• Group size: many accept bookings of up to about 12 people, and some groups end up larger.
• Minimum numbers: some tours only run if at least 5 or even 10 people have booked.
• Payment: usually cash only, at the end.
• Entrance fees: monuments, if included, are paid separately.
There are plenty of options. The biggest platform alone lists more than twenty free tours in Marrakech.
How Much Should You Tip on a Free Walking Tour in Marrakech?
Plan on at least 15 euros per person, around 160 dirhams. That is the minimum the main free tour platform recommends, and it notes that some guests give 15 and others up to 50 euros per person.
In Marrakech, many free tour guides themselves ask for around 10 to 15 euros per person if you enjoyed the walk. So for a couple, a realistic budget is 30 euros or more. For a family of four, 60 euros or more.
Our tip: decide your amount before the tour and bring it in small cash, in dirhams or euros, so the end of the walk is relaxed for everyone.
What Is Good About Free Walking Tours?
Free tours have real strengths, and many guides work hard to earn their tips.
• No commitment upfront: you pay at the end, based on how much you enjoyed it.
• A quick orientation: a good way to get your bearings on your first day.
• Social: you meet other travelers.
• Motivated guides: since tips depend on the experience, the best guides put real energy into the walk.
What Are the Limits of a Free Walking Tour in Marrakech?
The format works best for a quick overview, less for a personal or in-depth experience.
• Bigger groups: up to a dozen people or more, which is a lot in narrow Medina alleys.
• A fixed route: the same loop for everyone, whatever you are interested in.
• Less personal attention: hard to ask many questions or stop where you want.
• Possible cancellation: if the minimum number of guests is not reached, the tour may not run.
• The end-of-tour moment: some travelers feel awkward deciding a tip in front of the group.
• Shop stops on some routes: a few routes include a rest stop at a herbalist or shop. Ask in advance if you prefer to skip it.
What Do You Get on a Paid Walking Tour Instead?
A paid tour trades the "pay at the end" format for certainty and personalization. With us, that means:
• A clear price agreed before the tour, with no awkward moment at the end.
• Small groups of up to 6 people, or a private tour just for you.
• An experienced, licensed local guide with more than 20 years in the Medina.
• A route built around your interests: history, crafts, food, photography or shopping.
• Hotel or riad pickup on request.
• No minimum number: your tour runs even if it is just you.
• Shopping only if you want it. Daniel Jacobs noted in The Rough Guide to Morocco that our guides never push guests into shops.
Free Tour or Paid Tour: What Does It Really Cost?
Once you add a fair tip, the difference is often smaller than people think.
• A couple on a free tour: at least 15 euros each in tips, so about 30 euros.
• A couple on our small group tour: about 250 dirhams each, roughly 23 euros per person, with a maximum of 6 people.
• A family of four on a free tour: at least 60 euros in tips.
• A family of four on our private tour: from 900 dirhams for the whole family, roughly 83 euros, with your own guide and a route designed for you.
For a little more than a fair tip, you get a private or small group experience, a licensed guide and complete peace of mind.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose a free walking tour if you are on a very tight budget, travel solo, and want a quick first look at the Medina with other travelers.
Choose a paid small group or private tour if you want fewer people, a clear price, a guide who adapts to you, pickup from your hotel or riad, or help with shopping in the souks. It is especially worth it for first-time visitors, families and anyone with limited time in Marrakech.
Which Tour Options Do We Offer?
We do not run free tours. Instead, we keep our small group tours affordable and our private tours fully personalized.
• Small group walking tour: around 250 MAD per person, up to 6 people.
• Private walking tour: from 900 MAD for your family or group.
• Hotel or riad pickup: we meet you at your door in the Medina, or pick you up from hotels outside it.
• Same-day and last-minute: already in Marrakech? A guide can usually meet you within one hour.
• Shopping in the souks: our Marrakech Shopping Tour with a local shopping specialist.
• Rug shopping: our dedicated Rug Shopping Tour.
• Argan oil stop: a visit to our partner boutique with its own certified lab, or a private Argan Oil Tour.
• Tailor-made tour: your own mix of walking, shopping and discovery with our Tailor-Made Tour.
• Italian or Spanish speaking guide: available on request.
• Luxury and VIP: private transport, exclusive addresses and complete discretion, on request via WhatsApp.
